More detail

17a is looking to hire a Principal and a Lead to join our core team and work with us on program design and frontier innovation projects with public service delivery players.

Both roles are responsible for –

1) Managing (Principal) or supporting (Lead) healthcare-focused projects with state/city government as well as players on the frontlines of public service delivery and public problem solving (e.g., addiction treatment providers, state Medicaid agencies). This includes a combination of strategic project leadership, problem solving, ad hoc research and analysis, and ability to build strong relationships with teams, clients, and partners.

2) Working closely with our small, flat, and fun core team to lead other parts of our growth. This element of the role will be defined based on the candidate’s interests in specific aspects of 17a’s priorities.

Strong preference for candidates with demonstrated interest in improving public or social service delivery and 2+ years of work experience – typically Leads have 2-4 years of experience, and Principals have 4-7 years of experience, with some variation. Experience in some combination of fast-paced business building environments, public sector service design, or management consulting ideal.

Must be excited to do what it takes to find better, more successful models for public service delivery – we believe that a lot of the most important innovation requires getting in the weeds on ‘last mile’ problems in service delivery that are often unsexy, dusty and complicated. Our team loves that kind of work and is looking for others who do too.

We are based in Cincinnati and New York City – of course, with flexibility for remote options

Improving public service delivery requires a team with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

17A is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind based on race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability, protected veteran status, age, marital status, pregnancy, familial status, membership or activity in a local human rights commission, or status regarding public assistance.

We encourage and welcome applicants who identify with groups traditionally underrepresented in government to apply.

Please contact Kaija at [email protected], if you would like to request reasonable accommodation during the application or interviewing process.

You could be a great fit for this role if you have:

  • Excitement about the kind of work we do! You’re committed to advancing the quality and effectiveness of public service delivery in general and/or in specific areas of interest (e.g., health access, workforce development)
  • Comfort working on complex, open-ended problems
  • Experience leading client-facing teams
  • Interest and skill in building relationships in the public sector and other areas of public service delivery

How we work, and how you might, too:

  • Curiosity-driven communication style – listening, responding, and engaging effectively with diverse types of people

  • Creative, collaborative, and down-to-earth approach – we take our work seriously but love to laugh!

  • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to wrangle big ideas into digestible components

  • Commitment to excellence – not just getting things done, but getting things right
