Work With Us

17a is looking to hire a Director to join and co-lead our core team, with a focus on our projects in health and human services. The Director will be primarily responsible for –

  • Leading 2-3 projects at a time, with state/city government as well as players on the frontlines of health and human services (e.g., addiction treatment providers, state Medicaid agencies). The Director will be responsible for shaping projects and relationships, managing team members, and executing project work as needed. The role includes a combination of strategic project leadership, problem solving, ad hoc research and analysis, and ability to build strong relationships with teams, clients, and partners.
  • Grow and strengthen the team in other areas as relevant, by collaborating across the organization, adding to our culture, and developing new focus areas over time.

Strong preference for candidates with demonstrated interest in improving health and human service delivery, 5-10 years of experience in a fast-paced business building environment and/or a background in management consulting.

We are based in Cincinnati and New York City – of course, with flexibility for remote options!

Must be excited to do what it takes to find better, more successful models for public service delivery – we believe that a lot of the most important innovation requires getting in the weeds on ‘last mile’ problems in service delivery that are often unsexy, dusty and complicated. Our team loves that kind of work and is looking for others who do too.

Improving public service delivery requires a team with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

17A is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind based on race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability, protected veteran status, age, marital status, pregnancy, familial status, membership or activity in a local human rights commission, or status regarding public assistance.

We encourage and welcome applicants who identify with groups traditionally underrepresented in government to apply.

Please contact Kaija at [email protected], if you would like to request reasonable accommodation during the application or interviewing process.

You could be a great fit for this role if you have:

  • Excitement about the kind of work we do! You’re committed to advancing the quality and effectiveness of programs in health and human services
  • Comfort working on complex, open-ended problems
  • 3+ years of experience managing client-facing teams
  • Interest and skill in building relationships in the public sector, healthcare, and other areas of public service delivery
  • Background in healthcare delivery, in the context of management consulting, political or policy-driven organizations, or project based service design work

How we work, and how you might, too:

  • Curiosity-driven communication style – listening, responding, and engaging effectively with diverse types of people

  • Creative, collaborative, and down-to-earth approach – we take our work seriously but love to laugh!

  • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to wrangle big ideas into digestible components

  • Commitment to excellence – not just getting things done, but getting things right
