Public Innovation Fellow

Overview

17a is seeking passionate, creative, motivated students to join the second class of Public Innovation Fellows. This fellowship is designed to give students with interest in a given public problem area the tools and frameworks to think strategically about feasible, creative solutions.

Public Innovation Fellows will become experts in their chosen issue area, and will work with the 17a team to identify and develop clear, creative strategies to address their chosen problem. At the end of the fellowship, 17a will publish Fellows’ research and recommendations, to be shared with partners and entrepreneurs working on the issue from a variety of perspectives. In addition to published material, fellows will gain access to a network of past and current 17a partners working in start-ups, government, and large consulting firms on a broad variety of public problems.

Past areas of research include foster care, opportunity gap, early childhood education, criminal justice, behavioral health, and maternal health interventions.


The ideal candidate is… 

  • Passionate about understanding and solving public problems

  • Highly self-motivated and organized, with a strong desire to learn and grow

  • Comfortable working remotely and independently

  • Excellent in verbal and written communication

Duties and responsibility

  • Guided issue-area research and thought leadership development, with regular check-ins

  • Manage content creation for the issue area, including structured background research and a publishable opinion article on potential solutions

  • Additional opportunities include connection to 17a’s public problem-solving network, and the potential for paid research support on 17a contracts, commensurate with interest and experience

Position is remote, minimum 6-week commitment with flexible 5 hours/week, designed to fit in with academic and extracurricular commitments.
